Antique Curved Powder Horn | Black Powder Firearms Accessory | Circa Late 18th – Early 19th Century

Description

Historical Context & Origin

Region: Europe or Colonial North America
Material: Natural animal horn with faceted wooden stopper, wooden base plug, and iron suspension ring
Period: Circa late 18th – early 19th Century

Description

This well-preserved historic powder horn is a classic example of early firearms equipment, crafted from a naturally curved animal horn and used for the storage and dispensing of black powder. The horn features a faceted wooden stopper at the spout, designed for secure handling and controlled pouring, along with a fitted wooden base plug at the wider end.

An iron suspension ring remains intact at the base, still retaining its original cord, allowing the horn to be worn or carried during use. The surface displays a beautiful range of natural coloration—from warm honey tones to deep charcoal and olive hues—developed through age, handling, and exposure. Subtle tool marks and surface abrasions are visible throughout, consistent with hand-finished construction and long-term historical use.

Powder horns of this type were indispensable to soldiers, hunters, and frontiersmen during the age of flintlock firearms, forming a critical part of everyday life in the black powder era.
