Historical Context & Origin
Region: Egypt
Material: Egyptian faience (glazed composition)
Period: Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, 664–30 B.C.
Description
A finely molded Ancient Egyptian faience amulet depicting the youthful god Nefertem standing in a traditional striding pose with arms held at his sides. The figure is rendered in pale green glazed faience and backed by a narrow support pillar, a typical structural feature of small Egyptian cult figures and amulets.
Nefertem is shown wearing his distinctive lotus headdress, symbolizing the sacred blue water lily from which the sun was believed to emerge each morning. The simplified but recognizable crown rises prominently above the head, giving the figure its characteristic vertical profile. The body is clothed in a short kilt, and the stance reflects the canonical artistic conventions of Egyptian sculpture.
Small perforations visible along the back suggest the piece may once have been suspended or attached as a wearable protective amulet.
Features
- Mold-made faience figure of the Egyptian god Nefertem
- Characteristic lotus crown rising above the head
- Striding posture with arms held straight at the sides
- Rear pillar support typical of Late Period amulets
- Traces of original green faience glaze across the surface
- Perforation likely used for suspension or mounting
Cultural Significance
Nefertem was a youthful solar deity associated with the blue lotus flower, a symbol of rebirth, fragrance, and the rising sun. In Egyptian mythology the lotus emerged from the primordial waters at creation, bringing forth the first light of the sun.
Amulets depicting Nefertem were commonly placed within mummy wrappings or worn by the living as protective charms, invoking regeneration and spiritual renewal in the afterlife.
