Historical Context & Origin
Region: Ancient Egypt
Material: Faience (heavily mineralized with burial accretion and calcified deposits)
Period: Likely Late Period – Ptolemaic Period, circa 664–30 BCE
Description
This is a small and evocative ancient Egyptian faience amulet figure. Though now heavily worn from long burial, the general upright stance, squared feet, and faint head/torso definition suggest it was originally carved to represent a divine or protective figure, a common form worn in life or placed in burials as talismans of protection, rebirth, and favor of the gods.
The amulet shows deep calcification, earthy encrustations, and burial patination throughout, with extensive surface loss that has softened most of the original carved anatomical detail. A perforation remains just below the head, indicating it was originally strung to be worn as a personal devotional object. Despite its highly weathered condition, the figure retains clear archaeological authenticity and the haunting beauty of an object that has survived millennia.
Features
- Ancient Egyptian faience amulet figure
- Upright standing human/deity form with faint facial and torso definition remaining
- Original suspension perforation still visible
- Deep burial patina and calcified accretion throughout
Cultural Significance
Amulets such as this were essential spiritual objects in ancient Egyptian daily and religious life. They were worn for protection, luck, health, divine favor, and later placed with the deceased to ensure safe passage into the afterlife. Though time has changed its surface, this amulet still powerfully conveys the continuity of ancient belief and the deeply personal nature of Egyptian spirituality.
Condition
Extremely weathered archaeological condition. Heavy erosion, calcification, mineral accretion, pitting, edge losses, and surface fragmentation consistent with long-term burial and extreme age. The form is still identifiable as a figure and the suspension hole remains present. Stable for careful handling and excellent for collectors who appreciate untouched excavated artifacts with strong authenticity and historical presence.
Dimensions (Approximate)
Height: 1.25 inches
Age
Ancient Egyptian – Likely Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, circa 664–30 BCE
