Description

A finely preserved mid-19th-century cased photographic portrait depicting a formally dressed gentleman seated for the camera, housed within an ornate embossed presentation case characteristic of the early decades of photography.

The sitter is shown in formal dark attire with a white shirt and bow tie, his hair neatly arranged and pronounced sideburns framing the face. One hand rests naturally beside him, producing the composed, dignified pose typical of studio portraiture during the 1850s and early 1860s. The photograph is mounted beneath an oval gilt-metal mat with an elaborate diamond-patterned field and decorative floral edging.

Of particular interest is the original protective case. The exterior is richly embossed with an elaborate arrangement of flowers, foliage, scrolling ornament, and fruit-like forms arranged around a central floral composition. The dark surface retains traces of its original finish and decorative gilded border, while the interior opposite the portrait is lined with deep burgundy-purple velvet featuring a raised ornamental medallion and scrolling floral decoration.
