Ancient Pierced-Blade Bronze Spearhead | Circa 500 BCE – 300 CE

Description

Historical Context & Origin

Region: Northern Vietnam, Southeast Asia
Culture: Dong Son Culture
Material: Cast bronze
Period: Dong Son Period, circa 500 BCE–300 CE

Description

This ancient bronze spearhead originates from the Dong Son cultural tradition of northern Vietnam, a society renowned for its sophisticated bronze-working traditions and distinctive weapons, tools, ornaments, and ceremonial objects.

The spearhead was cast with a long tapering blade terminating in a pointed tip and an elongated hollow socket originally intended to receive a wooden shaft.

Two narrow elongated perforations appear symmetrically near the lower portion of the blade. Comparable pierced spearheads are documented among Dong Son bronze weapons and represent a distinctive construction feature found on some examples from ancient Vietnam. The overall form is notably elongated and narrow, with a pronounced central blade profile transitioning into the socketed base.

Its proportions closely correspond to documented Dong Son spearheads preserved in museum collections, including an example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art measuring approximately 8 1/16 inches long by 1 3/4 inches wide and dated circa 500 BCE–300 CE.

Centuries of burial have produced extensive mineral encrustation, pale green and blue-green oxidation, earthen deposits, and areas of darker patination across the bronze surface.

Features

- Long tapering blade with pointed tip

- Hollow socket for attachment to a wooden shaft

- Two elongated perforations through the lower blade

- Cast bronze construction

- Extensive archaeological mineral encrustation

- Green and blue-green copper-alloy patination

- Mounted on a modern black metal display stand

- Ancient northern Vietnamese origin

Cultural Significance

The Dong Son culture developed in northern Vietnam during the later first millennium BCE and became one of the most important bronze-producing societies of ancient Southeast Asia.

Its metalworkers are particularly celebrated for the monumental decorated bronze drums associated with the culture, but they also produced weapons, axes, spearheads, daggers, vessels, ornaments, and utilitarian objects. Bronze spearheads such as this example reflect both the technical abilities of Dong Son metalworkers and the importance of hunting and armed conflict within communities of the Red River region.

Socketed construction allowed spearheads to be fitted securely onto wooden shafts, while variations in blade shape, dimensions, and perforation indicate multiple regional and functional forms.

The paired openings on this example are particularly distinctive and are documented on other Dong Son spearheads recovered from ancient Vietnamese contexts.

Condition

The spearhead remains in archaeological condition with extensive mineral encrustation, oxidation, surface deposits, patination, pitting, edge wear, and areas of material loss. The blade edges and pointed tip display irregularity, thinning, and surface deterioration consistent with prolonged burial and considerable age. The lower socket displays losses and unevenness around the terminal edge. Green and blue-green oxidation is visible throughout, together with beige, brown, and darker mineral deposits.

Dimensions (Approximate)

Height: 8 in
Width: 1.75 in
Depth: 1.5 in

Age (Approximate)

1,700–2,500 years old
