16th Century (1500-1599) Artifacts

Renaissance artifacts are objects associated with the artistic and cultural developments that spread through Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries. Surviving examples include carved woodwork, stained glass, religious sculpture, prints, metalwork, furniture, and decorative architectural elements.

Religion remained one of the most important influences on 16th-century art and material culture. Churches, temples, and private patrons commissioned devotional sculpture, stained glass, prints, icons, and ritual objects, while the Reformation and Counter-Reformation changed how religious imagery was produced and used in parts of Europe.

In Japan, much of the century fell within the Muromachi and Sengoku periods, when military culture existed alongside sophisticated Buddhist, metalworking, lacquer, and decorative traditions. China was under the Ming dynasty, a period renowned for ceramics, bronze work, painting, sculpture, and religious art.

Researchers consider materials, construction techniques, artistic style, iconography, inscriptions, maker’s marks, manufacturing methods, and comparison with documented examples. Provenance and historical records can provide additional evidence when establishing an artifact’s likely date and origin.
