Region: Ancient Egypt
Material: Turquoise-blue faience with glazed surface
Period: Late Period, circa 664–332 BC
Description
This impressive Ancient Egyptian faience amulet depicts Bes, the beloved dwarf-deity associated with protection, joy, fertility, music, childbirth, and the safeguarding of households. Formed in classic Late Period style, the figure displays the powerful squat stance, muscular torso, protruding belly, and hands resting defiantly on the thighs — all hallmarks of Bes iconography.
Though the upper head portion is now lost, the figure retains excellent body definition, strong posture, and superb surface character. The original turquoise-blue faience glaze remains beautifully preserved with attractive mineral deposits and desert patina, evoking its long burial history. Standing larger than most amulets of its type, this is a substantial and highly evocative example of Egyptian devotional craftsmanship.
Features
- Authentic Ancient Egyptian faience amulet of Bes
- Classic stance with hands at sides and forward-facing posture
- Attractive turquoise-blue glaze with natural aged encrustations
- Strong sculptural presence and excellent proportion
- A protective deity highly prized in ancient households
Cultural Significance
Bes was one of the most personal and beloved gods of Ancient Egypt. Unlike many formal temple deities, Bes was a protector of homes, children, mothers, and everyday life. He was believed to ward off evil spirits, ensure safe childbirth, inspire happiness and music, and bring good fortune. Amulets like this were worn, kept in domestic shrines, or placed with the deceased as symbols of divine protection.

Good ancient condition with expected age-related surface wear and encrustation. Loss to the head portion, but the torso, stance, and overall form remain strong and highly recognizable. Stable surface with beautiful aged patina.
