Russian Orthodox | Devotional Cross | Hand-Engraved 84 Silver | Circa 1870–1900

Description

Historical Context & Origin

Region: Russian Empire, Orthodox tradition
Material: Solid silver, hand-cut and engraved; Russian 84 zolotnik (.875) silver standard, with maker’s initials (partially legible) on reverse
Period: Late 19th century, ca. 1870–1900

Description

Finely engraved Russian Orthodox pectoral/pendant cross, cut from a sheet of 84-standard silver with scalloped trefoil terminals and an elongated lower arm. The obverse shows the Crucifix with traditional Orthodox inscriptions: IC and XC (Іисус Христос) on the crossbar, an upper titulus (INЦI, “INRI”) at the top, and the spear and sponge-reed flanking the upright. The base is engraved as Golgotha with cross-hatched “Adam’s skull” mound—classic iconography on Russian devotional crosses.

The reverse bears the 84 zolotnik hallmark (.875 silver) and a maker’s stamp (partly worn), confirming manufacture within the Russian Empire.

Features

- Authentic Russian Orthodox engraved silver cross, late 19th c.

- Orthodox inscriptions (IC XC, INЦI) with spear & sponge devices

- Hand-tooled details and scalloped terminals throughout

- Stamped 84 silver standard on reverse (.875 fineness) with maker’s mark

- Lightweight, wearable devotional piece or framed icon element

Condition

Good antique condition with expected wear from devotion and age: light bends and surface marks, softening of some engraved lines, and a tiny nibble to the top tip where a suspension loop likely once sat (not affecting stability). Hallmarks remain readable; silver with pleasing, untouched patina.

Dimensions (Approximately)

Height: 1.5 in
Width: 1 in

Age (Approximately)

125–155 years old
